What My Morning with a Newborn Looks Like

From the moment Parker was born, I wanted to have a set schedule with him. Actually, scratch that. From before Parker was born I wanted to have a set schedule with him.

I had a lot of free time during my pregnancy and I took full advantage of it by reading as much as I could about babies and what a typical day should look like. Not to toot my own horn (toot toot), but I do think it helped me a lot in terms of what to expect and how to get myself ready.

Feel free to watch my YouTube video now if you want to see what my morning routine with a newborn baby looks like.

Baby Morning Schedule

7:00-7:30am Baby Wakes Up & Eats
7:30-8:00am Change Baby’s Diaper & Clothes
8:00-8:30am Baby Plays (Tummy Time)
Mommy & Baby Plays Together
8:45-9:00am Read Scriptures
9:00am Baby Naptime

That’s it. Short and sweet. We have to keep it simple for it to work in our household, but I understand it may be different for you.

Nate is gone during the week at work or school so it’s really up to me to decide what Parker and I do everyday. I will admit that some days are better than others, but for the most part I try to stick with this schedule.

You may have noticed that my morning routine doesn’t include eating, showering, or anything to get myself physically ready for the day. I choose to eat breakfast, shower, put makeup on (maybe), and clean while Parker is napping for the sole purpose that it’s easier.

Before you get the idea that I have it all figured out though, I want to let you in on a secret: The only thing the baby needs is to eat, sleep, and have a diaper change.

Parker doesn’t need me to read scriptures with him or even play with him. Lucky for us parents, the essential things merely happen once every few hours to give us time to breath. If you saw my video, I explained that I still get my work done in the mornings while feeding Parker or when he plays by himself.

So yes, I have a daily morning routine with my newborn baby. And yes, I try to be present and alert when he’s awake. But I have also learned to roll with the punches.

If, for instance, Parker has a huge blowout covering his outfit and the blanket he’s on, I’ve learned how to soak it in Oxyclean and wash it with my homemade laundry detergent.

Or if Parker is crying all morning and doesn’t want to sleep until an hour later than usual and only if I’m holding him, I’ve learned how to be more patient, put on a good TV show, and rock him until his eyes shut.

Being a parent and waking up every morning to a crying baby isn’t always simple or easy, but it is the best job in the world.
